Localcrop Weekly Update

Say, cheese!...We've got lots of new offerings this week from our friends at Middlefield Original Cheese Co-op, in Middlefield Ohio. Farmer-owned and -operated, this mostly Amish cooperative has nearly 90 members, all of whom are dedicated to maintaining traditional, handmade quality. Individual dairy herds are limited to around 20 head, hand milking is the norm, and the milk still arrives at the USDA-approved cheesehouse in traditional metal cans. Of course, added hormones or steroids never enter into this bucolic picture; the resulting products are an excellent reflection of cheesemaker Nevin Byler's craftsmanship and talent.

The new offerings include varieties both wild and mild. Among the first group, you'll find Fiesta Cheddar, Marble Pepper Jack, Habanero Jack, and Buffalo Jack with a hint of spicy wing sauce. And for those with more dainty palates, don't forget the Farmers Cheese, Yogurt Cheese, and Brick Cheese.
