Cousins Kirk, Kevin, Ken, and Steve Holthouse are the third generation to operate this Huron County farm, located about 30 miles south of Sandusky. Their inspiration? To preserve and expand the traditions established by their grandfather nearly 85 years ago. Among other things, this requires a devotion to hands-on management. From start to finish, we're right there in the fields, making sure the quality is there, says Kevin Holthouse. What we don't grow ourselves, we buy from nearby farms mostly owned by other cousins!" While salad crops were the farm's original focus, today Holthouse specializes in cucumbers, zucchini, and yellow squash in summer, and pumpkins, gourds, and winter squash in fall. "We also dabble in specialty peppers," says Kevin, with a crop that includes jalapenos, serranos, and sweet Cubanelles.
